Historic Center of Trujillo
The Historic Center of Trujillo , located in the La Libertad region , is one of the best-preserved colonial urban complexes in Peru. Founded in 1534 by the Spanish conquistadors, this center reflects the architectural, artistic, and cultural richness of the Viceroyalty.
Highlighted Features:
Plaza de Armas : This is the heart of the city, spacious and elegant, surrounded by important historic buildings. At its center stands the Monument to Liberty , commemorating Trujillo’s independence in 1820.
Colonial mansions : Along its cobblestone streets, you’ll find majestic colonial and Republican houses with wooden balconies, carved gates, and interior courtyards. Highlights include:
Urquiaga House (or Calonge House) : current headquarters of the Central Reserve Bank; Simón Bolívar stayed there.
Ganoza Chopitea House : famous for its baroque façade and the symbolism in its decorations.
Trujillo Cathedral : Built in the 17th century, it combines Baroque and Rococo styles. Its interior houses a valuable collection of religious art.
