The Kuélap Fortress is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in northern Peru, located in the Amazonas region. Built by the Chachapoya civilization , also known as the “warriors of the clouds,” this monumental pre-Incan structure is considered a jewel of Peruvian cultural heritage.

🏯 Features of the Fortress
Walls: Huge stone walls up to 20 meters high , surrounding an enclosure approximately 600 meters long by 110 meters wide .
Circular structures: More than 400 circular buildings , many of them decorated with friezes in the form of diamonds and zigzags.
Uses: Kuélap is believed to have been an important political, military and ceremonial center of the Chachapoyas, rather than a purely defensive fortress.

Kuélap is surrounded by cloud forests, giving it a mystical and majestic appearance. The area’s biodiversity is high, with orchids, endemic birds, and stunning landscapes of the Amazonian Andes.
🗿 History and Culture
Construction: Between the 6th and 16th centuries AD, before the Inca conquest.
Culture: The Chachapoyas were an Andean civilization with their own architectural and cultural style, later conquered by the Incas around the 15th century.
Rediscovery: Although the site has always been known to locals, it was only scientifically discovered in the 19th century.
