Cajamarca’s magical archaeological and tourist sanctuary, hidden among the rocks, boasts spectacular boulders and an ingenious water channel, a reminder of the intelligence of the Cajamarca culture a thousand years before Christ.
A vast area at 3,600 meters above sea level, it boasts infinite beauty, a beauty that isn’t obscured when the black curtain of night falls, as the stars illuminate it like millions of tiny light bulbs lit in the sky. That’s how magical Cumbemayo is.
It includes rock formations that are tourist attractions in and of themselves: the Cumbemayo Sanctuary, the cave, and the canal, all 3,000 years old.
The first of these is a cliff whose appearance resembles a human head only makes the place even more special. It has a narrow grotto just over 2 meters in diameter that leads to petroglyphs and niches.
The cave, or rather, the tunnel, is a narrow, dark passage between indented rocks and petroglyphs, which are part of the history and legend of the archaeological complex. Scary? Yes, is it fun? Also.
