Choquequirao
Known as the “sister of Machu Picchu,” Choquequirao also has a striking stone citadel, as well as its own story to tell. Located between the collision of two very different worlds, the Andes and the Peruvian Amazon, it is completely surrounded by vegetation, making it a difficult place to access.
Impressive for its location, situated at the top of a peak in the Salcantay snow-capped mountains, this city was hidden from humankind for almost four centuries, making it a mysterious place for archaeologists, researchers, and curious visitors who choose to visit its territory. Construction of this site dates back to approximately 1536, under the rule of the Inca Empire.
Where is?
Transportation is not permitted. All routes to Choquequirao are done on foot, on excursions that take two to three days. You must be physically prepared because these are long walks. And you must also be mentally prepared, because both the climate and the altitude of Cusco make this route, which is popular with hikers, a bit more challenging than it would be in less rugged terrain.
