Chan Chan Archaeological Zone
Chan Chan (Chimor) was the capital city of the Chimú culture that flourished on the northern coast of Peru between the 12th and 15th centuries. The city was a major metropolis populated by people from throughout the Chimú Kingdom, the largest the Americas had ever seen up to that point.
Chan Chan is a pre-Columbian adobe city built on the northern coast of Peru by the Chimu people. It is located northwest of the Trujillo metropolitan area, between the districts of Trujillo and Huanchaco. Chan Chan is made up of ten walled enclosures called “citadels” and several solitary pyramids.

The Chan Chan Archaeological Zone is located in the province of Trujillo, La Libertad Region. It was the political, religious, and administrative capital of the Chimor kingdom, which dominated the ethnic groups along the entire northern coast of Peru.
